December 2022 Contractor of the Month is: Primal Outdoor Lighting

How did you get into the landscape lighting business?

I worked with someone that taught me how to install lighting, then was branched out to do it on my own. It was recently this year that I had the courage to go out and start my own business.

What percentage of your business is landscape lighting/what other services do you provide (ie: landscaping, irrigation, electrical…)?

My company is 100% landscape lighting at the moment.

How long have you been installing landscape lighting?

I've been Installing landscape lighting since I was 19, so about 5 years.

What AMP products do you prefer to use? Which fixtures are your favorite?

My favorite to use are the AMP® RGBW Fixtures since they work so easy with the remote and have high lumen output.

What tips or tricks have you learned that have benefited your work from a design/installation perspective?

I learned that balance is always an eye catcher and to take a step back and envision yourself at night and what you would like to see when everything is lit up, what trees take better spot lights, where can you break the darkness with a path light and something that is very underrated is using down lights for a pathway it will leave clients amazed.

Tell me about your sales process. How do you find your customers? What is your sales process? Do you use sales tools such as a free demo…

Usually my clientele is all word of mouth or rarely a facebook ad or google ad, my sale process is meeting with client and flagging out my vision with separate color flags to represent different fixtures, that way the client can also have that vision, for “iffy” clients i come back at night and plug in a light fixture to a battery that way it can be a quick way to show them the out put of the light fixture. I do free consultations at the moment but once i grow im planning to charge for consultation and credit it back to the client if we do a sale.

Where do you find inspiration for your lighting designs?

This answer can vary, big estates are easier to get inspiration from, but sometimes it's hard to get inspiration for small estates with messy yards. I guess inspiration will always be depending on the landscape. condition of the home for me.

What do you feel is the most personally rewarding part of installing a lighting system for a client?

The most rewarding part is the client's reaction, with lighting you can make good money but the only thing that separates a designer from a landscaper that does lighting is our vision and also being able to utilize different fixtures effectively, not only path and spot lights.

Tell us a little bit about you personally: What do you like to do outside of work? What are your hobbies?

I’m a young guy. I love spending time at home with my puppies and with my girlfriend (soon to be wife) . My hobbies include training, mma, wrestling, but I love doing what I do so it doesn't even feel like work.
