G & B Landscape Management provides every person with superior lawn and landscape service. G & B Landscape Management has been in business since 2009, working with many different clients and job types in the Lincoln, Alabama area. Adding landscape lighting has allowed us to really expand the jobs that we have had in the last 3-4 months.

Tell Us About Yourself & Your Company

I have been in the Landscaping business since 2009. For years we have done routine maintenance and yard work. Over the last few years, we have transitioned into hardscapes and outdoor lighting. It has helped us tremendously in broadening our opportunities.

The Interview

  • How did you get into the landscape lighting business?

I have a friend that is a landscaper that I partnered with on a couple jobs and was able to learn a lot with them prior to taking off on my own.

  • What percentage of your business is landscape lighting/what other services do you provide (ie: landscaping, irrigation, electrical…)?

We are about 75/25 now on lighting and landscaping over regular lawn maintenance. We provide new landscaping, sod prep and hardscape jobs.

  • How long have you been installing landscape lighting?

We have been doing lighting for a little over a year now. We have been able to really expand on our jobs in the last 3-4 months very steadily.

  • What AMP products do you prefer to use? Which fixtures are your favorite?

I have found that we like the AMP® EcoPro MR16 Spotlight (Lamp-Ready) and the AMP® MagnumPro Path & Area Light(Lamp-Ready) and AMP® SummitPro Path & Area Light(Lamp-Ready). That is the majority of we what we have been using the most of routinely.

  • What tips or tricks have you learned that have benefited your work from a design/installation perspective?

We have been able to improve the exterior curb appeal of all the homes we have done. Most of the customers had no idea how much it would change the look of their home at night. It has been so nice for the customers to be so appreciative of the outcome of the lights.

  • Tell me about your sales process. How do you find your customers? What is your sales process? Do you use sales tools such as a free demo…

For now, I am posting all our jobs on Facebook and Instagram. I have been able to get several jobs via friend referrals from those posts. I am hoping to get a software of some sort to be able to show the customer what the house could look like after lights but have not been able to get to that point yet. I think it would help sale the jobs tremendously. I do take a spotlight with me, to show them the product, so that can feel the product an see the quality.

  • Where do you find inspiration for your lighting designs?

I am also a real estate agent, so I have found that both have worked hand in hand with one another. When you can see a house lit up at night, it makes such a big difference regarding a wow factor for customer feedback. I just love helping customers find out new ways to love their home more than they do already.

  • What do you feel is the most personally rewarding part of installing a lighting system for a client?

When the client can come out after completion and say, “it looks better than I even could have imagined”, you know you have gone above and beyond on what they were expecting to get. I usually always add a light or two extras to help make it that much better anyway.

  • Tell us a little bit about you personally: What do you like to do outside of work? What are your hobbies?

I love being outside, whether it’s on the golf course or on a landscaping job. I have enjoyed being able to sell real estate in the past couple years, which I have been able to get business on lighting and landscape from being on the other side of the sale. It’s been helpful to be able to show people what lighting and landscaping can do for their space that they have and how to make the best out of it. Sometimes people cannot have the vision for what they want. I have been fortunate with the vision side. I can see the end result before we even start on the project. That blows customers away, most of the time.
