Tell Us About Yourself & Your Company

Frankie Vaughan was 10 years old when a relative who owned a landscape business asked him to pass out flyers to promote their business. Soon Frankie was spending weekends, days off of school and summer breaks working in the landscape business. At age 17 he started his own landscape business with one helper. Scenic View Landscaping has grown to more than 40 employees and offers a variety of services including landscape design/installation, hardscaping, drainage, commercial maintenance and landscape lighting. Landscape lighting was initially an afterthought. If a customer asked him if they could install landscape lighting he would say “if you buy it we will install it for free”. His customers typically bought lighting from Lowes or Home Depot. Frankie realized there was a need to provide professional grade lighting products and decided to add lighting as a service line. Now his team promotes landscape lighting to all of their customers regardless of what service brought them to Scenic View Landscaping. Due to their reputation and high quality of work their landscape lighting business has grown primarily through referrals.

The Interview

  • How did you get your start in the landscape lighting business?

    We started off doing mainly landscape installations, and overtime many customers were asking to install lighting as well andwe thought it would be a great opportunity to add landscape lighting as a service we provide. We now offer landscape lighting, and hardscape lighting.

  • What percentage of your business is landscape lighting/what other services do you provide (ie: landscaping…)?

    Just 1% of our business is landscape lighting. We provide landscaping, hardscaping, drainage, and landscape maintenance.

  • How long have you been installing landscape lighting?

    Landscape lighting has been apart of our service for about 17 years.

  • What AMP products do you prefer to use? Which fixtures are your favorite?

    We prefer to use Magnum Pro Path and Area Lights, Pinnacle Pro MR16 Spotlights and the rotatable lamp-ready hardscape lights.

  • What tips or tricks have you learned that have benefited your work from a design/installation perspective?

    The location of placement of landscape lighting fixtures, setting them far enough away from objects to light up more of the object. Burying landscaping cables prior to installing mulch and fabric.

  • Tell me about your sales process. How do you find your customers? What is your sales process? Do you use sales tools such as a free demo…

    Most of our customers find us on Google, Angie's List, or word of mouth. We also have a store front with a showroom and we take an AMP spotlight and path light on sales calls to show customers the product quality compared to what they would buy at big box stores.

  • Where do you find inspiration for your lighting designs?

    Our inspiration stems from the previous homes we have done, and years of trial and error. Every property is unique and we look for unique features to illuminate.

  • What do you feel is the most personally rewarding part of installing a lighting system for a client?

    It takes a normal landscape that you cannot appreciate when it is dark out to a whole new level once the lights turn on. Owners are wow'ed by the hardscape and landscape we provide, but something about seeing it lit up at night makes it look that much nicer.

  • Tell us a little bit about you personally: What do you like to do outside of work? What are your hobbies?

    I am married, with 3 younger kids. I enjoy spending time with them on my days off. I enjoy playing outside with them, and watching them learn new things. As a hobby outside of work and spending time with my family, I enjoy playing golf, and relaxing enjoying my newly installed swimming pool. I also enjoy taking long weekend trips with my family to such places as beaches, boardwalks, and winter resorts. We are planning to open a landscape nursery that will be occupying a lot of my time in the near future.
