Can you tell us about your business?
I am well-rounded in the lighting industry, installing any type of low voltage LED lighting from landscape lighting to underwater pool and strip lighting to designing and manufacturing my own line of lighting products, which are sold in stores across the US.
How did you get into the landscape lighting business?
I have been very interested in lighting from a young age, it all started with playing around in my father’s garage with LED diodes, then moved on to strip lighting, and before I know it, I'm installing landscape fixtures for friends and family members – and word spread from there.
What percentage of your business is landscape lighting/what other services do you provide (ie: landscaping, irrigation, electrical…)?
I would say as of now, landscape lighting covers around 40% of the work I perform but it is very steadily becoming more of what we do. We only install low voltage lighting and do not offer any other services.
How long have you been installing landscape lighting?
I have been in the lighting industry steadily for around 20 years, but around 10 of those has been with landscape lighting.
What AMP products do you prefer to use? Which fixtures are your favorite?
I really enjoy using the Hydrapro in-grade fixtures on most client’s homes to light up their trees and their house itself. I enjoy using them because they are less likely to get kicked or broken while other landscaping company's walk through the client’s garden beds trimming up foliage.
What tips or tricks have you learned that have benefited your work from a design/installation perspective?
I have learned that sometimes less is more and you really don't need a lot of fixtures to properly illuminate the customer’s home. In fact, using the proper fixture type and proper placement makes all the difference.
Tell me about your sales process. How do you find your customers? What is your sales process? Do you use sales tools such as a free demo…
I would say 95% of my sales leads happen through referrals from friends, neighbors and past clients. I offer free consultations over the phone, online and in person. I like to walk the property with the customer and listen to their wants and needs. I ask if I can offer a professional recommendation or suggestion and then I show the customer each fixture I would be using for their installation and put those fixtures in the customers hands to show them the quality and style.
Where do you find inspiration for your lighting designs?
I find my inspiration and designs through trial and error over the years. I also practice with new and unusual fixtures at my own house before offering to others.
What do you feel is the most personally rewarding part of installing a lighting system for a client?
At the end of the day, turning on the landscape lighting system for the first time and watching the excitement and pure joy on the customer’s face.
Tell us a little bit about you personally: What do you like to do outside of work? What are your hobbies?
The other part of my business is sales and marketing for my own product line which requires me to travel across the US to show different stores and dealerships my products in person. While on the road I like to break up the trips by exploring national monuments, parks and local restaurants.
